- PC Bible Atlas for Windows README.TXT File
- Version 1.0j
- January 1996
-
- This "readme" file contains up-to-date information that was not available at
- the time that the User's Guide was printed, or information that is subject to
- change. Information on the following topics is included.
-
- TOPIC 1: Performance
- TOPIC 2: Export
- TOPIC 3: Printers
- TOPIC 4: File Corruption
- TOPIC 5: Backup
- TOPIC 6: TrueType Fonts
- TOPIC 7: Usage Tips
- TOPIC 8: New Features (Version 1.0i)
- TOPIC 9: New Features (Version 1.0j)
-
-
- TOPIC 1: Performance
- Unless you have used computer aided design (CAD) software or software that
- has a heavily graphic orientation, you are probably not accustomed to the
- work environment found in a program like PC BIBLE ATLAS. With PC BIBLE
- ATLAS you can view, scroll, and zoom more than 100 maps, as well as
- immediately tag any point on any map with latitude/longitude coordinates.
- The technology used to bring all this to you is sophisticated. Consequently,
- some of the tasks take a little more time than you might expect. If you
- have a 386 processor on your machine, you should be sure to run Windows in
- enhanced mode if at all possible. In addition, PC BIBLE ATLAS is memory
- intensive. As with any Windows application, the more memory you have on
- your machine the better. If you are simultaneously running other
- applications, your speed in performing certain functions may be reduced.
-
- TOPIC 2: Export
- PC BIBLE ATLAS supports a number of file formats that can be exported via
- the Export Maps feature. Although the formats are somewhat standardized,
- there are a variety of ways they can be interpreted. As a result, export
- in certain formats to certain programs may not work. For example, we've
- found that you may not (depending on your version of Microsoft(R) Word for
- Windows(TM)) be able to import PC BIBLE ATLAS maps in a Windows Metafile
- (.WMF) format. If you cannot successfully transport PC BIBLE ATLAS files
- in a particular format, try a different format.
-
- TOPIC 3: Printers
- Printing in a Windows environment has many advantages and a few drawbacks.
- From a programming perspective, Windows acts as an agent between the
- application and the user's printer. Unfortunately, this does not allow
- any customizing of print functions from the application's perspective--which
- is to say, PC BIBLE ATLAS does not "talk" directly to your printer, Windows
- does. If you experience difficulty in printing, you should first verify
- that the printer driver you are using is the most current. Secondly, you
- may want to experiment with different printer settings to get the proper
- performance out of your printer.
-
- TOPIC 4: File Corruption
- In the event you exit PC BIBLE ATLAS in a nontraditional manner (for
- example, if you experience lightning or a power outage while the program
- is running), you may experience a File Handler message indicating there
- has been file corruption when you try to restart the program. In most
- every case, simply confirming the messages request to rebuild the files
- (by pressing Enter or clicking Yes) will successfully rebuild the files
- and the program will run as before.
-
- TOPIC 5: Backup
- If you are creating and saving your own user-designed maps and articles,
- it is always a good idea to back up your data on a regular basis.
-
- TOPIC 6: TrueType Fonts
- PC BIBLE ATLAS requires the use of True Type fonts. If you receive
- messages telling you there are no fonts available, it probably indicates
- that you do not have TrueType fonts enabled on you Windows Control Panel
- or that a printer has not been selected.
-
- TOPIC 7: Usage Tips
- PC BIBLE ATLAS offers so many features and ways to view and manipulate
- data, it may initially appear overwhelming. Following are a couple of
- suggestions of ways to get your feet wet with PC BIBLE ATLAS:
-
- * Open a map of your choosing and swap backgrounds or merge maps
- (under the Maps menu)to one of the "modern" backgrounds to see the
- biblical/historical items in the context of modern-day political boundaries.
-
- * Open the Place/Names dialog (by selecting Find/Select Items under
- the Search menu) narrow the list to only "events" (by checking only the
- events box and selecting the Apply button), then browse or select the
- different maps with which to view the events (by selecting the Maps list
- button).
-
- TOPIC 8: New Features (Version 1.0i)
- * Verses are hotlinked to QuickVerse -- clicking on a green verse
- executes a "hot link" to QuickVerse.
-
- * Cross Reference Searching has been added under the Search Menu.
- This allows a user to find all articles linked to a given article.
-
- * Verse Reference Searching has been added under the Search Menu.
- This allows a user to find all maps and articles that reference a
- given verse.
-
- * Cross hatching of regions has been added to the graphics palette.
-
- * Black and white backrounds have been created. (especially for
- export to other programs)
-
- * PC Bible Atlas for Windows now uses an .ini file -- pcbawin.ini.
- This file gives the option of specifying a location for the program
- data files (except for maps.idx and maps.dat that must remain in
- the program directory.
-
- * The .ini file (pcbawin.ini) gives the user the option of setting
- Read Only to 1. This makes the application read only. (0 makes it
- read/write) The default is 0.
-
- * In read only mode all of the menu items that allow a map or
- article to be modified disappear.
-
- * The Edit Menu now includes a find feature for articles.
-
- TOPIC 9: New Features (Version 1.0j)
-
- Version 1.0j provides a new menu option (Search | QuickVerse Library)
- and toolbar button supporting the QuickVerse Library program.
-
- The QuickVerse Library is a new product similar to the Holman Bible
- Dictionary but supporting many books at one time. That is, several
- books can be opened, searched, and viewed at once. The QuickVerse
- Library also supports DDE to QuickVerse 3.x and this version of
- PC Bible Atlas for Windows. It can be considered an upgrade from
- the Holman Bible Dictionary as the dictionary is now available as
- a QuickVerse Library book.
-
- The Holman Bible Dictionary path field in the Settings dialog has
- been renamed to simply Dictionary. You can set this field to point
- to The QuickVerse Library program also if you use The QuickVerse
- Library as your dictionary program instead of The Holman Bible
- Dictionary. Selecting the 'Lookup' button or Search | Dictionary
- menu option with a city or text selected will invoke an index
- lookup in The QuickVerse Library program.
-
- The Settings Dialog has also been updated to allow you to enter
- a path to the QuickVerse Library program. Once the path has
- been set, the menu item and toolbar button work as follows.
-
- Selecting the menu option or the toolbar button with nothing
- selected starts The QuickVerse Library if it is not already
- running. If it is already running, it becomes active and moves
- to the front of the display order.
-
- Selecting the menu option or the toolbar button the button
- with a city or text selected will invoke The QuickVerse Library
- and display a search dialog with the selection in the search
- string field. If the selection has a number it, the Verse Search
- Dialog is displayed. If the selection does not have any numbers,
- the Text Search Dialog is displayed.
-
- The QuickVerse Library program has a menu option and toolbar button
- for this version of PC Bible Atlas for Windows but will not work
- with previous versions.
